After a failed attempt of chasing NX-12 northbound and nearly two hours of waiting in the hot sun, we were delighted to see Housatonic Railroad Train NX-12 passing the Pittsfield (Massachusetts) Amtrak Station on the CSX Berkshire Subdivision, southbound en-route to Canaan, Connecticut, with GP35M #3600 and GP35 #3604 as power. The Engineer was also friendly enough to give us a nice wave despite the fact he looked very hot and tired. |

Upon arrival in Canaan, Connecticut, NX-12 underwent a crew and symbol change, with the trains crew change complete and new symbol of NX-13X, the two Electro-Motive "Geeps" begin cutting out empty lime hoppers and boxcars in the Canaan Yard. Soon NX-13X and its new crew will pull out of Canaan for New Millford, Connecticut with four loaded centerbeams destined for a lumber yard in New Millford. The new crew was even friendlier as I got a wave nearly every time the train passed over the Main Street crossing during their switching moves. |

An hour and a half after switching the Canaan yards, Housatonic Railroad NX-13 comes around a bend along the Housatonic River on approach to the first River Road crossing in West Cornwall, with HRRC EMD GP35 #3604 and its fouled Conrail-tuned Leslie RS3L air horn leading and GP35s #3601 and #3602 trailing. #3602, which has recently been assigned to NX-10 south of New Milford, but had been taken to Canaan to be serviced and fueled, is now deadheading back to New Milford to take over south-of-New Milford operations from GP35M #3600. Due to track condition, which led to multiple minor derailments in the last few years, a 10MPH speed restriction is now in place south of Canaan, Connecticut, the previous 25MPH limit, which the crews would often push to 30MPH or more, was unsafe. |
